How Long Will a Round Take?

One of the most practical questions any caddy should answer before accepting a booking is: how long will this actually take? The answer varies more than most people expect, and being caught off guard can throw off your entire day.

9 Holes vs. 18 Holes

A nine-hole round typically takes 2 to 2.5 hours on a moderately paced course. Add 20–30 minutes for setup, greeting, and wrap-up, and you're looking at a 2.5 to 3-hour commitment from arrival to departure.

An 18-hole round is a different story. Budget 4 to 5 hours on course, plus your pre-round arrival time and post-round responsibilities like cleaning clubs and saying a proper goodbye. In total, expect a 5 to 6-hour day for a typical 18-hole loop.

What Affects Pace

No two rounds take the same amount of time. The main factors are:

Group size: A twosome moves significantly faster than a foursome. Larger groups add 20–45 minutes or more to the total round time.
Walking vs. carts: Walking rounds are almost always slower than cart rounds by 30–60 minutes, depending on the course layout and distance between greens and tees.
Skill level: Beginners take more shots, spend more time searching for balls, and need more time over each shot. A group with high handicappers can add a full hour compared to a group of single-digit players.
Course congestion: On busy weekends, even fast groups get backed up. Check in advance whether the course tends to run on time or consistently falls behind.
Course design: Some courses have long walks between holes. Others are compact. Ask the pro shop if you're unfamiliar with the layout.

Planning Your Day Around a Booking

When you accept a morning tee time, plan for it to occupy the full morning and part of the afternoon. Don't schedule anything important until at least 90 minutes after the latest realistic end time.

Practical planning tips:

Add a buffer when estimating end time. If an 18-hole round starts at 8:00 AM, don't commit to anything before 2:00 PM.
Eat a solid meal before you arrive. You may not have a chance to break away during the round.
Confirm the 9 vs. 18 status in the booking details. If it's ambiguous, message the golfer before the round.

If the Round Is Cut Short by Weather

Weather suspensions happen. If you've already arrived at the course and the round is halted by lightning or severe weather, you've earned time for the work you've done. Most caddies are compensated for the portion of the round completed plus reasonable waiting time.

If the round is officially called off before you arrive, you generally won't receive full pay — but this is a good reason to confirm the weather situation the morning of any booking, especially in markets with unpredictable conditions.

If a Golfer Cancels Last Minute

Last-minute cancellations are frustrating but they happen. A few things to keep in mind:

The platform has a cancellation policy that protects caddies who arrive on time and in good faith. Review the policy in your account settings so you know exactly what you're entitled to.
If a golfer cancels with very short notice and you've already traveled to the course, document your arrival and contact support through the platform.
